In short: In 2026 the DVSA changed how car driving tests are booked in Great Britain. Only you, the learner, can now book, change, swap or cancel your test. You get 2 changes after booking, and you can only move your test to one of the 3 test centres nearest to the one you booked.

The new rules, step by step

RuleFrom
You can make only 2 changes to a test after booking31 March 2026
Only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel a test. Instructors and booking apps or "test finder" services can't do it for you12 May 2026
You can only move your test to one of the 3 centres nearest your booked centre9 June 2026
If the DVSA moves your test (for example, bad weather), you get your 2 changes back, and you can use them online26 March / 19 June 2026

What counts as a "change"?

  • Moving the date, the time or the test centre counts as a change.
  • Changing several things at the same time (for example date and centre) counts as one change.
  • Updating your contact details, or adding or removing your instructor's reference number, does not count.

After 2 changes, if you need to change again you'll have to cancel and book a new test.

Refunds

Cancel at least 10 full working days before your test and you get a full refund.

Can anyone help me?

Yes. A parent, friend or support worker can help you book, as long as you're there and do what you can yourself. Your instructor can't book for you any more, but can still tell the system when they're available and you can add their reference number to your booking.

Watch out for scams

Unofficial services that scan for cancellations or sell test slots are now not allowed. Only book on the official GOV.UK service. If a website or social media account offers you an "earlier test" for a fee, don't pay.

Tips to avoid wasting changes

  1. Agree the date with your instructor before you book.
  2. Pick a centre you're happy with, because you can only move to the 3 nearest.
  3. Check you'll still have your theory pass in date: your theory certificate lasts 2 years.
  4. Practise with our free theory questions and mock tests while you wait.
